On November 30, 2023, I delivered a keynote at NBN for the International Day of People With Disabilities celebration. This event was a profound reminder of the power of inclusivity and its positive impact on society.
A Unique Experience
Presenting while seated was a new experience for me, and it fostered a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. This setup allowed for a more personal connection with the audience, making the discussion genuine and engaging.
Sharing My Stroke Story
Sharing my stroke story was both empowering and emotional. It underscored the importance of creating safe spaces and fostering genuine human connections—values that resonate universally. This message is crucial not only for those affected by trauma or disability but for everyone, as it touches on the core of our shared human experience.
Discussing Invisible Disabilities
We delved into invisible disability awareness, exploring how to create environments where everyone feels supported and understood. The engagement from NBN staff was heartening, as they asked insightful questions and shared their perspectives, contributing to a meaningful dialogue.
Open Live Q&A
Briar Harte, a fellow peer with living experience of disability, hosted an open live Q&A session following the keynote. This interactive segment was a highlight, offering a platform for attendees to voice their thoughts and questions. It reinforced the importance of open dialogue in fostering understanding and inclusivity.
Morning Tea with Executives
The event concluded with a delightful morning tea, during which I had the chance to connect with NBN executives. These interactions were invaluable, as they provided an opportunity to discuss how inclusivity can be integrated into broader business practices, positively impacting society.
Broader Social Impact
Events like these highlight the importance of including often-unheard perspectives. We can drive positive social change by fostering environments that embrace diversity and inclusivity, creating a society where everyone feels valued and heard. This approach benefits individuals, strengthens community bonds, and promotes a more cohesive society.
Acknowledgments
I'm deeply grateful to Briar Harte for her impactful leadership. Her passion for disability advocacy set the tone for the entire celebration, creating an atmosphere of genuine care and commitment to change. I'm also grateful to my speaker representatives for this event at ICMI, especially Joanne Neville, for their support in making it a success.
Final Thoughts
Leaving the NBN offices, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. Sharing our stories and engaging in open conversations can lead to real change. Let’s continue to build understanding and inclusivity for everyone. Thank you, NBN, and let’s keep this critical dialogue going!
