Strutting My Stuff at the Inaugural National Disability Awards

Oh, What a night!

I've just had the incredible honour of hosting and MCing the inaugural National Disability Awards, and let me tell you, it was as momentous as it sounds. As someone with a less visible disability, being asked to lead this celebration felt like a perfect example of the disability services sector walking its talk.

A Celebration of Inclusion and Excellence

The National Disability Awards, an initiative of National Disability Services (NDS), aims to recognise and promote the outstanding contributions of individuals, groups, and organisations working towards a more inclusive Australia. It's about showcasing the very real difference people in this sector make to the lives of those with disabilities and our communities at large.

Pink Power Suit and All!

Picture this: a sea of shoulder pads, sparkling jackets, and beaming faces filling a huge space. The atmosphere was electric, balancing excitement with the sensitivity needed in an industry that faces unique challenges. And there I was, in the middle of it all, strutting my stuff in a pink power suit that would make Elle Woods blush!

A Night of Artistic Brilliance

The event wasn't just about awards - it was a true celebration of talent. We were treated to performances by an incredible dance crew, a mesmerising light artist, and a band that had everyone tapping their feet. The joyous atmosphere perfectly captured the spirit of inclusion and diversity.

Rubbing Shoulders with the Stars

One of my personal highlights was getting home and garden tips from the amazing Johanna Griggs. It's not every day you get to chat about landscaping with a TV icon while hosting a national awards ceremony.

More Than Just an Awards Night

What struck me most about the evening was how it embodied the idea that creating a more inclusive Australia is everyone's responsibility. The awards showcased how small changes in the way we consider, include, and value people with disabilities can add up to make a big difference.

Looking to the Future

Reflecting on this incredible experience, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement. It was an honour to helm this event and play a part in celebrating the brilliant people in our Australian Disability Services community. And you know what? I'm already looking forward to bringing my pink suit pizazz to more events in the future!

The inaugural National Disability Awards were more than just a ceremony - they were a testament to the passion, innovation, and commitment of those working tirelessly to create a more inclusive Australia. Here's to many more years of celebrating these incredible achievements!
